We were able to get to many of the films that were headlined
in the lineup, and hope to see the others in due course. It was amazing to see some of the old actors
like Kim Novak and Sidney Poitier, who look nothing like what we picture in our
minds when we hear their names! It’s
also fun to realize that the stars themselves are pretty excited to see each
other at an event like this, because they work in their own worlds and only
actually rub shoulders on this special night each year.
The other neat thing was that we got to see the whole show,
right to the last award, and still have a couple of hours to go before
bedtime! The show is aired live across
the country, so for the sake of everyone in the east, it starts at about 4 in
the afternoon out here in California. So,
for the first time, I didn’t have to burn the midnight oil in order to find out
what won Best Picture!
So what did we do for the rest of the day when we weren’t
watching the Oscars? Well, it was a day
of rest, so we did that. I drove into
town this morning to attend the service at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, a
lovely little building on a tree-shaded street, with a beautiful organ and talented
choir.
We were pleased to see that, although we did get quite a bit
more rain overnight, the wind has finally died down, and the forecast for tomorrow
looks hopeful. The staff at the RV park here were busily clearing away all the
debris that blew down over the last couple of days; mostly pine needles and
leaves, but a few tree branches at the back of the park.
There was time this afternoon for us to go over maps, brochures
and travel guides and plot the route ahead, both in detail for the coming days
and in generalities for the weeks after.
It’s always nice to have an idea of where we will be next, but we like
the flexibility of our approach, so that we can stay longer when we want to see
more (or when circumstances demand) and move on when we’re ready.
And ready we are, to move on! Stay with us to see what happens next!
